When Google Alerts stops being enough

Google Alerts still earns its keep for news and blogs. The mistake is assuming that "the internet talked about us" and "Google indexed a page about us" are the same event.
Most product complaints now start as a reply, a Reddit comment, a YouTube timestamp, or a Threads post. Those surfaces restrict crawling. Google Alerts can only fire on what has already entered the index — late, partially, or never.
The failure is quiet
Teams cancel Google Alerts because "nothing important showed up," then learn about a thread from a customer screenshot three days later. Nothing in the Alerts UI told them the instrument was pointed at a different internet.
That is not a Google bug. It is a category error: using a web index as a social listening tool.
A useful split
Keep Google Alerts (or a news monitor) for press. Add a social listener for the platforms where your customers actually post. Overlap is fine; pretending one covers both is how crisis detection becomes archaeology.
If you want the longer comparison — including when Alerts is still the right free choice — we wrote it as a product page, not a sales deck: Google Alerts alternative for social platforms.
The test
Pick a complaint you know happened on Reddit or X last month. Search Alerts history for it. If it is missing, you already know whether "we have monitoring" is true or just comforting.
